Prepping for a Move

With the mindset that I will be moving soon, I have been trying to prepare my life and my flat for relocation.
All of the blog posts or videos I have seen on tips for moving seem to focus on minimising the number of things you have to make your move easier.
While I agree that getting rid of unnecessary things, I don’t think that’s the entire answer.
As I go through my flat and prepare to move, I am sorting my things into four categories.
The first are things that I can get rid of. These I am listing or donating now so that they stop cluttering up my life.
The second category is for things that I plan on taking with me. I feel like that one is pretty self-explanatory.
The third is for things that serve me for now but that I will likely get rid of when I move. This is mostly organisers or items that work in this flat but are either not nice enough to bother with moving country or are unlikely to work in a new location.
The final category is one that I think more people should consider focusing on if they are planning to move, let alone planning on moving country. That is the category of things I want to consume.
While cleaning up my flat, I have found duplicate items, items I had been saving for a special occasion, and food things that would be bulky to move. This takes a LOT of time. It’s amazing how many things fit into this category you will find when you look. It’s even more if you are an artist like me and you have lots of things you’re keeping for a future project.
Over the last few months, I have been eating the tinned food, using up the conditioner sachets that came with my hair dye, finishing the duplicate bottle of laundry soap, and using my face masks. Even after months, there are still a lot of things that are consumable in my flat. I feel like for every project I finish, another dozen pop up. Every time I finish an item, I find a new one or something comes free with purchase. The progress is agonisingly slow.
The amazing thing about it is that while the process is slow, I am making progress. I can see that I have more room in my cabinets and less junk on my dresser top. Even if I don’t end up moving for quite some time, I am grateful that I have done this. The longer I am in my flat, the more things I can consume, and the less will be going to landfill when I do end up moving.
With all the time this has taken, I recommend trying this if you are even considering moving.
