Preptober is over, and so is the write 50k in 30 days course. I’ll give my thoughts on the course part now. However, one of the great benefits of the course is access to an accountability group for actual Nano. So I’ll review the course now, but I’ll give a fuller review in late Nov/early Dec if you want to wait for that.
So first thoughts first, I’m glad I caught the sale.
I think that 500 would be more than a bit much for the information provided. For many of the resources, the information was re-uploaded videos or worksheets from Kristen Matins YouTube. It was nice to have them all in one space, but they didn’t add that much value to the course. There is also the fact that you can find similar resources from other YouTubers (for free) with just a quick Google.
The value of the course is in three spots. First, there is the large workbook with prompts to help you build out the plan for your novel over the course of the month. These require increasing amounts of time which helps you to prepare for the time commitment that Nano is. Each week there is a live class where you go over the work for the week ahead and why the work is important for your novel. The classes also link the past work to the new work so you can see the thought process and how you’re building a foundation for a good book.
The second thing of value is the course-specific videos that are exclusively on the courses site or in the privet Facebook group. These are sorted by week to support what you’re doing in the course at the same time. They give additional suggestions of things to do to help “find flow” and get into the routine of writing. Four of these videos from last year and two new ones were added this year. Since access to the course is a lifetime membership, I can only imagine that this will continue to be added to as the years go on.
Finally, there is the community aspect. You share pictures of your “homeworK” and share your progress as well as your goals for Nano. You can win prizes for meeting your targets. This continues through Nano. Many people in the Facebook group share their Nano handles so you can track their success on the official website as well. The community aspect only really happens in Oct and Nov when the live classes are happening. But like with access to the course, you can participate in these for as long as the course is held (It is marketed as lifetime access).
Thus far, I would wholeheartedly give it my endorsement - but that is only at a discounted price. This might change by the end of Nano or in a couple of years if the course continues to be built out. I am least excited about it. It’s a necessary part of the story, but it’s going to be a slog to write.
Fingers crossed that it keeps up the way it has been going.
