Update: I didn’t get the job. But the email with my rejection was very encouraging and mentioned future jobs/future applications, so I’m going to keep learning Dutch and see if a spot opens up in the future that would be a better fit.
I think I might put this post on hidden mode for a bit.
I’m writing this post because I want to hold myself responsible for my goal of learning Dutch, but I’m not ready to put it out there fully.
I found a job that looks like it might be my dream job. It’s an English-speaking job, but it’s based in the Netherlands. I was told that I would hear in three weeks whether or not I would be a good fit. So while I wait to hear about the job, I plan to spend several hours a day learning Dutch with the goal of having finished all of a beginner course before I would hear back.
The way I see it, this will show my sincerity both for the job and my willingness to relocate. Hopefully, this will be an impressive feather in my cap in any interviews.
If I don’t get the job, then it will be something that can aid me in future applications (though I am hoping that I can get this job).
My goal is to learn over 1,000 in drops and complete Busuu and Duolingo level one. This should give me a decent base and be equivalent to taking a beginner Dutch course somewhere. This should take two or so hours a day for three weeks. I don’t think this amount of studying would be sustainable long term, but I do believe that it would be something I can maintain for three weeks.
Of all the places I have researched, the Netherlands is the one that would be the best fit for me, and this job is a writing job that involves travel. With these things in mind, I think it’s more than worth the effort because, one way or the other, I feel like Dutch will be part of my future.
I’ll update when I have more information.
I might even publish this where others can see it if I get the job.
Bonne chance and geluk!
